The first workshop was about appropriation and how images are used as part of other images/design to create a new piece. Our task was to take photos of images that have been appropriated around Lincoln, focusing on faces in particular – Images In The Wild. I had never realised until this workshop how many images are taken from others in everyday life and how people use them to advertise something or make part of their brand.
This is my favourite image of the ones I took. I love the black and white style and how it enhances the different tones and textures of the woman’s face, hair and hands. This was taken of a giant photograph in a shop window and has been obscured by the ends of the glass meeting in front. The photo was used to advertise the clothing in the shop, but it is successful appropriation as it could be a regular photograph of a woman posing taken by a photographer and we wouldn’t know any different. I like how the neutral tones capture the natural beauty of the model. The focal point is the model putting in earrings, suggesting fashion and accessories – providing us with a bit of context as to why the image is there.
This image was taken by user: elliatownsend. I really like the warm toned colours in this image. The tones are saturated, reminding me of 80’s style coloured makeup. I like the strong contrast between vibrant red and yellow-toned skin. The composition also works well as the framing has cut off half the mouth and a bit of the nose – it creates an interesting composition as you want to see what the rest of the image is like and who the person is. I like how it’s a modern picture but the bright colours and slight noise in the image also add a vintage effect, in my opinion.
